Deputy Minister of Transport and Highways, Prsasanna Gunasena told the Times online that the government plans to import around 20 locomotives under the Indian Credit line.
He said that they are planning to hold discussions with the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his visit to Sri Lanka regarding obtaining the new train engines.
He added that they are planning to commence the construction of the Signaling system in the northern line using a grant from Indian government.
The Maho – Anuradapura track renovation as well as setting up signaling system were two separate projects done by the same company, Times online understands.
The track was constructed first, but the construction of the signaling system was held back due to due to economic crisis in the country and thereafter the credit line too was halted due to the debt restructuring program.
