At least seventy-eight office trains have been cancelled at the last minute due to a railway strike this evening causing inconvenience for daily commuters.
According to an official attached to the office of the General Manager of Sri Lanka Railways, the strike was launched over an incident where a Railway guard was assaulted by a security guard. The Army has been deployed at the Fort railway station following the cancellation of trains and protests by commuters.
Railway General Manager Kumara Gunasinghe confirmed that about forty per cent of office trains have been affected. "We are trying our level best to operate more trains," he said.
Furthermore, Operative Superintendent M. J. Indipola said that guards are delaying the trains on purpose in order to get the trains cancelled.
