Hambantota District Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) stated today that he and the SLPP will intervene to secure relief to farmers whose crops have been damaged due to the prevailing drought situation.
Addressing a meeting of the 'Bala Mandalaya' of the Hiriyala electorate, Mr Rajapaksa pointed out that the SLPP parliamentary group intervened to raise issue over problems with the 'Aswesuma' welfare benefit scheme. The scheme is now being reviewed as a result and the party was watching the situation closely to see if things are proceeding as they should, he added.
He further added that while the government has now started purchasing paddy from farmers. the price given for paddy is not satisfactory. The SLPP parliamentary group has also discussed this matter, he revealed.
