Supply chain management will be introduced as a new topic within the Business Studies subject in the Commerce stream for Advanced Level students in Sri Lanka's government schools starting in 2025.
“This initiative is part of the new Education Forum, with all preparations now finalized in collaboration with the National Institute of Education (NIE) in Sri Lanka, and our main goal is to implement it as a separate subject," said Mr. Jayantha Gallahewa, President of the Institute of Supply and Material Management (ISMM) and Vice President of the Organisation of Professional Associations (OPA), during a media release on October 18, 2024.
In the media release He further elaborated on plans for the National Supply Chain Day and the 52nd anniversary celebration of ISMM, set to take place tomorrow, October 24, 2024, at the Shangri-La Hotel in Colombo, starting at 8:30 a.m.
The event will also feature the presentation of the National Supply Chain Excellence Award 2024, highlighting the increasing significance of supply chain management in Sri Lanka and recognizing outstanding contributions in the field.
He stated that, as a pioneer in the supply and material management sector, the institute's main ambition is to introduce supply chain management strategies to government entities, private organizations, and even individual families across Sri Lanka.
He emphasized that the principles of supply chain management are important for everyone, as they can help eliminate excess costs, prevent wastage, and result in significant savings, while also improving efficient inventory control.
ISMM, the only professional organization established by Act of Parliament No. 3 of 1981 to promote and provide training in supply chain management in Sri Lanka, has taken the initiative, in collaboration with the Ministry of Industries and the Industrial Development Board (IDB), to organize the “National Supply Chain Day” celebrations tomorrow, October 24, 2024, at the Shangri-La Hotel in Colombo.
The event will be held in two phases:
*Morning Session:8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. – International Seminar on “National Supply Chain Day”
*Evening Session: 7:00 p.m. onwards – “National Supply Chain Excellence Awards,” recognizing the Best Practicing Organization of the Year and the Supply Chain Professional of the Year, followed by the 52nd Anniversary Banquet celebrating “National Supply Chain Day.”
The theme selected for the seminar is “ Supply Chains Innovations In Crisis: Exploring New Avenue & Adapting to Global Shifts” . The morning session Chief Guest will be Dr.Harini Amarasuriya, Prime Minister of Sri Lanka.
Mr. Chris Oanda, President of the International Federation of Purchasing and Supply Management (IFPSM), will participate as the Guest of Honour, and Mr. Marakku Henttinen, Chief Executive Officer of IFPSM, will attend as a special guest. Mr. A.A.M. Thassim, Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka, will deliver the keynote address, alongside many other distinguished guests who will grace the memorable occasion tomorrow.
