Survey on elephants after 13 years

News

The Director General of the Department of Wildlife, Chandana Suriyabandara, said that they have scheduled to carry out the survey in 3130 centers on August 17, 18 and 19.

He elaborated that the DWC would collect data on population dynamics and the current condition of the elephant population.

According to him, the department would gather data ratios such as sex, age, as well as other details to compare with previous data to update the knowledge of elephants.

The survey findings would help to update the knowledge of the elephant population and help with elephant conservation purposes.

The Director General explained that they would not close wildlife parks or halt safari rides during the survey, but would stop accommodating visitors at wildlife bungalows as they would be given to the personnel who carry out the survey.

He added that the DWC had notified visitors that the bungalows would not be available for visitors during the survey a month prior, and had halted taking in bookings via wildlife websites temporarily due to the survey.
