Surveying of land next to a naval base in Mandathivu, Jaffna had to be temporarily halted last evening (18) following opposition by area residents and local politicians.
Officials from the Surveyor General's Department were conducting surveys on an 18-acre plot of land next to the 'Welusumana' Naval Base when area residents and local politicians started a protest against the move.
The protesters insisted that the land being surveyed is a private land and that the navy has no rights to it whatsoever.
As the protest was taking place, the Velanai Divisional Secretary arrived at the scene and said that the survey work on the land will be temporarily halted and that further steps will only be taken in consultation with the Lands Ministry.
