The Sri Lankan tea industry has written to President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa highlighting the grave concern that Ceylon Tea will lose its global market share and face a significant drop in revenue and exports following the ban on chemical fertiliser.
An immediate cessation of chemical fertilizer without an alternate viable solution, will result in an almost 40-50 per cent drop in volumes and export revenues, the letter dated May 6 stated.
The letter was signed by all stakeholders in the industry namely the traders, exporters, planters, brokers, smallholders and factory owners.
It could also result in a loss of livelihood and unemployment, retrenchment of workers both in the field and factories that will affect the rural population drastically, it stated.
Further, the letter noted that Sri Lankan exports that currently stands at 14.5 per cent of total global tea exports in 2020 will be reduced to below 10 per cent with no ability to regain these lost markets once they start importing from teas from other origins. (SD)
