Police have arrested a teacher at a school in Kalthota over reckless and neglectful conduct after a 16-year-old student drowned during a school excursion.
Police Spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana said the female suspect, who was the teacher-in-charge of extra curricular activities at the school, had taken a group of 15 students for a swim in the Walawe River on Saturday as part of an excursion.
A 16-year-old female student who was part of the group had drowned in the river while the group was bathing. Her body was later recovered by police.
Kalthota Police conducted an investigation into the incident and it was revealed during the probe that the teacher had not obtained permission from either the school principal or the zonal director of education before taking the students on the excursion to the river.
Accordingly, police had arrested the teacher for reckless and neglectful conduct. She is to be produced before the Balangoda Magistrate. Kalthota Police are investigating.
