Teachers should be prioritised to receive the COVID-19 vaccine, once frontline health personnel and military and police are vaccinated, the Minister of Power and Energy Dullas Alahapperuma has suggested.
“It is evident that health workers and high-risk populations will be the first recipients to receive the vaccination”, he said addressing a meeting at Kamburupitiya .
“At present there are around 4.2 million school children in our country. As the former Minister of Education, I am well aware of the value of these children. Therefore vaccinating the teachers will help protect teachers from the virus, allow them to teach in person, and ultimately keep schools open”, he said.
“Accordingly, I request the Secretary to the President Lalith Weeratunga to give priority to our school system as well”, the minister said.
