Three persons have been taken into custody in Jaffna over an assault on a member of a local government body last night, police said.
Ramanathan Yogeswaran (32), a member of Chavakachcheri Pradeshiya Sabha was assaulted by unknown persons when he went to Navatkuli area last night following complaints he received of anti-social activities happening in the area.
Locals said that the local councilor was targetted since he was very vocal about the illegal activities such as thefts, drug peddling etc happening in the area in recent past and voiced against them continuously.
Chavakachcheri police said arrested three persons are to be produced before the Magistrate court. Further police investigations over the incident are underway.
