The 18th anniversary of the Tsunami disaster was commemorated today (26) in events held in various parts of the island.
As happens every year, this year's main commemoration event was held in Peraliya, Hikkaduwa, at the monument constructed at the site where the Galle-bound train was destroyed by the waves that day, killing more than 1200 passengers onboard. The Railways Department organised the ceremony.
A two-minutes silence was held across the island from 9.25am-9.27am to mark the moment that the first waves came ashore in Sri Lanka.
