News

The Health Ministry's Chief Epidemiologist Dr. Sudath Samaraweera confirmed today (13) that the new variant of COVID-19 virus found in the United Kingdom (UK) has been detected in an individual who arrived from the UK recently.

The research team led by Professor Neelika Malavige of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura identified the new strain of the virus.

Dr Samaraweera also noted that the newly identified strain can spread rapidly compared to earlier ones and the infection rate is also significantly higher. He said special attention should be focused on those who are coming from abroad in the wake of new virus strain being identified in the country.
