A group of persons have threatened the Uthayan newspaper editorial staff over the publication of a news item, according to the management..
According to Managing Director of the Uthayan Publication Private Ltd E saravanapavan the incident had taken place on Sunday at the Uthayan daily office in Jaffna.
“A Group of people came in two vehicles and entered uthayan newspaper premises with hostile attitude to deal with the editorial staff. One of the senior staff was surrounded by them and threatened him over a news that appeared in todays (Sunday) paper.
A Police entry has already been made. But despite the fact that we're in possession of video footage immediate action could have been taken but it's not so yet. Taking action is rather essential to ensure freedom of speech and expression otherwise incidents may take further more and staff may not be able to work with the free mind,”the statement said..
However, Police said that a preacher in the area has been arrested over the incident.
