The Vavuniya Town has been isolated for 12 days due to the rapid spread of COVID-19 within the town limits, Vavuniya District Secretary S.M. Saman Bandulasena said.
He said the decision to isolate the town was taken after a meeting held at the Vavuniya District Secretariat this morning on the prevailing situation.
He added that PCR tests conducted on those at business establishments in the town have found 129 persons to be COVID-19 positive as of this morning (12).
Accordingly, the area from Mundimuruppu Army Camp to Thandikulam, and the area from Mamaduwa Junction to Nelukkuma Junction have been isolated.
As of today (12), all shops and banks in the town are closed for a period of 12 days. Only patients coming to visit Vavuniya Hospital, government officials and those working in essential services will be allowed into the town. Those who violate these instructions and enter the town illegally will be subjected to quarantine laws, the District Secretary added.
The town's isolation will be lifted on January 24.
