Veteran actress who performed in both cinema and theatre Miyuri Samarasinghe passed away yesterday at the age of 81.
She was well renowned for her acting in teledramas and movies such as Madol Duwa, Yasa Isuru, Viragaya, Yuganthaya , Yuwatipathi , Maruthaya and Bhava Duka.
She studied at Holy Rosary Catholic School, Moratuwa and thereafter at Musaeus College for further studies.
She was also talented in dancing as well and was capable of both upcountry and low country dancing.
She also have acted in stage plays such as as Ran Kanda, Umathusan Warusawa, Bammanno, Uruvisi, Hitha Honda Ammandi, Nattukkarayo, Nekatha, Othello, Sivamma Dhanapala, Lora and Nawasiya Anu Nawaya.
She won Presidential awards for the best performance in 1976. She was awarded the best actress award at the presidential festival 1981. That award was given for her acting in stage play Nawasiya Anu Nawaya.
She did not restrict herself in acting and took on directing and producing nine stage dramas. Some of them are Loka Dekak Athara, Parasakwala Peyak, Ammai Puthai, Hima Kurullo. Her stage play Hima Kurullo received four awards at the Golden Design Awards for best Actor, Actress, script as well as production.
