The Education Ministry must abolish the circular which held Principals and Teachers as reponsible authorities for the safety of the students, Teachers Unions urged over the weekend.
Unions pointed out that the safety of students must not be entrusted with school officials and parents alone especially due to the current situation of the country.
"We accept that teachers are responsible for the safety of the children. But vesting this responsibility with teachers alone during this situation is completely wrong. We have notified the Education Minister in this regard," General Secretary, Ceylon Teacher's Union Joseph Stalin said.
Meanwhile, General Secretary of the Ceylon Teacher's Services Union Mahinda Jayasinghe also expressed similar sentiments to that of Mr. Stalin. "A special plan must be operational with the participation of the defence authorties to ensure the safety of all students," Mr. Jayasinghe pointed out.
