AG's Dept. tells Court, decision to bring SLRC under President through gazette was constitutional

News

The Attorney General (AG)’s Department today (Oct 18) told the Supreme Court that the President's decision to bring the Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation (SLRC) under his purview through a gazette was constitutional.

Additional Solicitor General Indika Demuni de Silva, appearing for the AG, argued that the President was constitutionally vested with powers to decide on the subjects of the ministries under his purview.

Ven. Dambara Amila Thero and Professor Chandragupta Thenuwara had petitioned court, arguing that the President’s decision to bring the SLRC under his purview was unconstitutional.

They argued that the President could only handle matters concerning the ministries of Mahaweli Development and Environment, and Defence, which were under his purview.

The case has been fixed for further hearing on October 28.
