Minister of Power and Energy Mahinda Amaraweera condemned the alleged assault on a Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) Meter Reader in Pelmadulla and said he directed police to strictly implement the law against those who committed the assault.
Issuing a statement, the minister said he was informed of the assault last night and he directed Power and Energy Ministry Secretary Wasantha Perera to immediately hold an inquiry into the incident and see that the person who carried out the assault is brought to justice.
The minister said the Meter Reader is a Government employee and if there had been any mistake regarding the reading of the meter, it could have been resolved through discussion without resorting to assault. The minister pointed out the public had already been briefed regarding how their electricity bills will be calculated during the period of the lockdown imposed due to COVID-19.
He said he directed the Ministry Secretary to write to the IGP asking that the law be strictly enforced.
