An army corporal was killed and seven others injured after a double cab carrying a group of soldiers skidded off the road and overturned at Girithale in Minneriya at about 1.30am today (7).
Police Media Unit said the incident had occurred at Girithale on the Polonnaruwa-Habarana road when the driver lost control of the vehicle. Eight of the 10 army personnel in the vehicle suffered injuries in the accident and were admitted to Polonnaruwa hospital, where one succumbed to his injuries.
The deceased has been identified as a 31-year-old army corporal attached to Girithale 2 Army Camp. The body is lying at the Polonnaruwa hospital mortuary.
The driver of the double cab has been taken into custody and Minneriya police are conducting further investigations.
