The Police have sought the assistance of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID)’s Cyber Crime Unit to tackle misuse of social media during the presidential election.
Police Elections Secretariat chief DIG Sarath Peiris said that the police would closely monitor social media sites for mud-slinging content and fake news concerning the election.
This exercise will go on until a week after Saturday’s poll.
Meanwhile, the Police have also sought the assistance of Sri Lanka's cyber security monitor - Computer Emergency Readiness Team (CERT) in this regard.
DIG Peiris noted that steps would be taken to ban social media accounts and pages which engage in unlawful conduct.
In addition, individuals who publish and share content against the stipulated standards will also be tracked down and arrested, he warned.
