Batticaloa Mayor Thiagaraja Saravanapavan has warned that legal action would be taken against individuals who engage in unauthorised activities that result in the blockage of drains.
These remarks had been made at a Batticaloa Municipal Council session yesterday (Dec 5) when councillors had been asked to put forward suggestions to drain flood waters in the area.
During the session, the Mayor had stressed that the Council's Disaster Risk Reduction Unit should remain active during periods which are likely to see the occurrence of disasters.
He had also called on other responsible stakeholders including the councillors to extend their support towards minimising disasters in the district.
The inclement weather has affected more than 33,000 people in the Batticaloa District, leaving around 40 homes damaged, Disaster Management Centre statistics show.
The Meteorological Department has predicted showers between 100 and 150 mm to be experienced in the area due to the North East monsoon.
