The bodies of a couple have been discovered with cut wounds at a residence in Devahuwa in the Matale district, last night.
The deceased have been identified as 53-year old Gamini Suraweera, an Agriculture Research and Production Assistant, and his 51-year old wife by the name of Anula Suraweera.
Ms. Suraweera was awarded by the Department of Agriculture for introducing 52 agricultural crops in the Central Province.
It is reported that the victims were attacked using sharp weapons by an unidentified group of individuals at around 8 pm yesterday when their children had left for Galewala. The children had discovered the bodies of their parents upon returning to their residence.
Preliminary investigations have revealed that the victims were attacked while they were having dinner at their residence.
It is believed that two brothers of the deceased woman had carried out the killing over a land dispute, Police Inspector Thilanga Fernando said adding that three teams of police personnel have been deployed to arrest the suspects.
