The deceased, identified as M.R.M. Safees, a 36-year old father-of-two, had been the owner of a coconut estate and had issued loans with interest rates. His remains had been missing since August 11.

During a questioning carried out by the police, the suspects had confessed that they had buried the body in a five feet pit in the Puluthivayal area in Puttalam.
Upon recovering the body, the remains of the businessman had been exhumed in the presence of the Puttalam District Magistrate and the Assistant Judicial Medical Officer (JMO) of the Puttalam Base Hospital.
Magistrate Indrajith Buddhadasa had ordered the police to submit the post-mortem examination report to the Assistant JMO.
