News

The missing remains of a millionaire businessman had been found buried after he was killed in Puttalam, Police said yesterday (Aug 15).

The deceased, identified as M.R.M. Safees, a 36-year old father-of-two, had been the owner of a coconut estate and had issued loans with interest rates. His remains had been missing since August 11.

Preliminary investigations have shown that the businessman had been killed when he had gone to collect his loan from a borrower. Information received by the police have revealed that an argument had taken place between the victim and the borrower at that time.

The person who had obtained the loan and his friend have been taken into custody over the killing. Police noted that the arrest had been made using the assistance of CCTV footage and telephone records between the businessman and the suspect.

During a questioning carried out by the police, the suspects had confessed that they had buried the body in a five feet pit in the Puluthivayal area in Puttalam.

Upon recovering the body, the remains of the businessman had been exhumed in the presence of the Puttalam District Magistrate and the Assistant Judicial Medical Officer (JMO) of the Puttalam Base Hospital.

Magistrate Indrajith Buddhadasa had ordered the police to submit the post-mortem examination report to the Assistant JMO.
