Bus overturns in Dambulla; 15 injured
Fifteen passengers were injured after a private bus skidded off the road and overturned in a culvert at Inamaluwa on the Dambulla-Habarana main road early last morning. The injured were admitted to the Dambulla and Habarana Hospitals.
The bus had been traveling from Kaduruwela to Kandy when the accident occurred. The bus conductor said the driver had lost control of the vehicle in rainy conditions and the vehicle skidded off the road. Police said the bus had smashed into a telephone pole and had still continued on before finally overturning in a culvert.
Many people had been asleep when the incident occurred and had only woken up as the bus started to overturn.
Both the bus driver and conductor are among the injured. Three of the wounded are in critical condition, hospital officials said. Sigiriya Police who arrived at the location soon after the incident had taken measures to protect belongings of the passengers. Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
