The Cabinet of Ministers has approved a proposal to erect a statue of former South African President Nelson Mandela in Colombo. Accordingly, a plot of land owned by the Colombo Municipal Library has been identified to install the statue of the iconic South African leader.
However, government provisions will not be used for this purpose. According to the Cabinet Office, attention was also drawn to install statues and monuments to respect national heroes and those who deserve to be honored in a particular place instead of installing such statues and monuments in different places.
Nelson Mandela was the first black president of South Africa, elected after time in prison for his anti-apartheid work. He won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993.
