Cabinet approval has been granted to amend the Muslim Marriage and Divorce Act (MMDA), the Department of Government Information said.
Approval had been granted after the Justice Minister and Muslim Religious and Cultural Affairs Minister had submitted a joint proposal to cabinet yesterday (Aug 21).
Among the proposed amendments were laws pertaining to the minimum age limit for marrying, registration of marriage and providing consent.
Several rights groups had been demanding for reforms in the MMDA by citing issues of child marriages and the Quazi court system.
