The Department of Census and Statistics (DCS) has decided to conduct an island-wide population count in 2021.
Data concerning family members, houses, and building material used in the construction of houses would be gathered during the exercise, DCS Additional Director General G.M.P. Anura Kumara said.
Mr Kumara added that the 14,000 Grama Niladhari divisions in the country would be broken down into 85,000 small units and be drawn on a new map.
He further said that latest technology and methods would be used to collect data unlike the previous population counts, which take place once in a decade. Some 1700 Census Department officers will engage in the exercise, the DSC Additional Director General added.
He noted that the assistance of development officers too would be obtained in this regard.
