The Information Technology Society of Sri Lanka (ITSSL) states that the advent of mobile technology, its accessibility and affordability with Chinese companies could be a cyber threat to the country.
ITSSL Chairman Rajeev Yasiru Kuruwitage Mathew said “not only Chinese mobile applications but also the mobile broadband services built in Sri Lanka with the assistance of Chinese companies could be a threat."
It further stated that user data collection threatens to allow Chinese companies access to personal and proprietary information .
It is reported that certain apps which enable users to enter the region have been identified as a spying tool and a means of collecting sensitive state secrets, advanced research and development data, and access to diplomatic or commercial data.
"As ITSSL, we will take necessary measures based on the global best practices procedures if Sri Lanka faces any threats due to such applications”.
The Ministry of Defence heads accountable for managing cybersecurity risks to the systems and the Sri Lanka Information Technology Association urges the government to be vigilant in this regard.
Some countries have banned mobile apps, such as TikTok, SHAREiT and WeChat, terming them prejudicial to sovereignty, integrity and national security.
