The China Harbour Construction Company (CHCC) has got a Sri Lankan government contract to do a feasibility study on building a naval dockyard at Hambantota in the south of the island, according to the respectable Lankan website www.economynext.com. The Lankan cabinet spokesman Rajitha Senaratne had earlier told the media that the cabinet has decided to look into the prospect of building a naval dockyard in Hambantota. Hambantota already has a harbour which the CHCC had already built and which has been lying grossly under utilised. A reliable source told Express that it was the CHCC which had proposed the construction of a dockyard in Hambantota. The source further said that the dockyard will build and repair civilian as well as naval ships. The CHCC has already built a port in Colombo and is in the process of building the posh US dollar 1.4 billion Colombo Port City. (The New Indian Express)
