Five hundred and fifty seven prisoners were released yesterday under the presidential common pardon offered to prisoners for Christmas, local media reported.
The prisoners detained for minor offences received the presidential common pardon. Of the total, 50 prisoners of Welikada Prison, 50 of Mahara Prison, 31 of Bogambara Prison and 426 of other prisons were released.
Most prisoners had been detained due to their inability to pay fines imposed for minor offences.Several prisoners aged over 70 serving a jail term for a long period were also freed.
