Circular issued on COVID-19 prevention measures for schools

News

The Ministry of Education states that a circular was issued yesterday (11) detailing COVID-19 prevention measures that should be taken by schools and other education institutions prior to reopening.

The circular has been issued based on the guidelines presented by the Director General of Health Services on measures that should be taken within school premises to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Accordingly, the ministry emphasizes that Health Promotion Committees should be activated at provincial, zonal and institutional level to ensure that health guidelines are strictly followed.

Measures that are required include installing handwashing facilities at all entry gates and exits, classrooms and toilets at schools / education institution and taking steps to ensure uninterrupted water supply. If the premises of the school or institution is being used for some other purpose, then it should cease three days before school is due to reopen. The entire premises must be cleaned and disinfected. A sick room must also be maintained at all schools and education institutions to accommodate any person who falls sick. Staff must be briefed and delegated responsibilities. Parents, students and past pupils must also be briefed. Social distancing guidelines must be adhered to while attention should also be focused on conducting counselling. These measures and more are included in the circular issued yesterday, the ministry added.

The release quoted Education Minister Dullas Alahapperuma stating that a decision to reopen schools, pirivenas, teacher training collages and other education institutions will only be taken after the Government is satisfied that these institutions have taken all measures recommended by health authorities to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
