Leading civil society organisations have urged the Speaker to ensure that the Parliamentary Select Committee probing the Easter Sunday attacks must continue to function without any undue influence.
These civic groups had made this request when they called on Speaker Karu Jayasuriya at his official residence today (Jun 10).
"As trade unions and civic groups, we require a correct report on how the Easter Sunday attacks occured and who must be held reponsible over this incident," a representative of a civic group said during the meeting.
He opined that events of this nature cannot be prevent from occuring in future if the root causes are not identified and subsequent measures are not taken.
In response, the Speaker had said that he would put forward their suggestions before the upcoming party leader's meeting.
