The Government is requesting the Chief Justice to take steps to restore the public confidence in the judiciary in the aftermath of damage caused by the surfacing of alleged phone recordings between UNP MP Ranjan Ramanayake and several judges, Cabinet Spokesman Minister Bandula Gunawardena said.
Addressing reporters at the weekly Cabinet media briefing, the Minister said the Government would not push for the appointment of a Parliamentary Select Committee to probe the matter since it did not want a conflict to develop between the judiciary and the legislature.
"This is a matter for the CJ and the Judicial Service Commission. We hope they will take steps accordingly," Mr Gunawardena stressed.
