The Committee on Public Enterprises (COPE) has requested Speaker Karu Jayasuriya to consider amending Standing Orders of Parliament so that the media can have access to proceedings of the Committee, its Chairman JVP MP Sunil Handunetti said today.
He said that all members of the Committee were in agreement that its proceedings must be more transparent so that the public can have confidence that there is proper scrutiny of the manner in which public finances are utilized by government institutions.
Mr.Handunneti made this comments during a press conference this afternoon at the Parliamentary complex. Earlier in the day he presented an interim committee to Parliament detailing shortcomings in utilizing funds by 19 institutions.
He said that every cent of public money was important and had to be accounted for and COPE was determined to make sure that officials are held accountable. (CK)
