A court order has been issued to ban a perahera which was set to take place in Dehiwala today (Jun 7), since it could spark communal tensions, police said.
Police had received intelligence reports of a perahera and a meeting which was being organised by former parliamentarian Akmeemana Dayarathana Thera and a few others in Dehiwela, Police Spokesman Ruwan Gunasekara said.
He noted that a court order was subsequently sought in this regard since these unlawful gatherings could disrupt peace and develop tensions among the community.
Accordingly, the Mount Lavinia Magistrate's Court had decided to completely ban the perahera and the meeting under the Emergency Regulations.
