Court orders to provide translations of Vijayakala's speech
The Colombo Chief Magistrate today directed the Commissioner of the Department of Official Languages to provide written transcripts of the Sinhala and Tamil video recordings of the controversial speech made by former State Minister Vijayakala Maheswaran to the Organized Crime Prevention Division (OCPD).
The order was given after the OCPD requested the magistrate to direct the Commissioner of the Department of Official Languages to complete a translation of the alleged speech.
In her recent speech, Mrs. Maheswaran allegedly called for a return of the LTTE if people in the north and east are to live peacefully without crimes taking place.
She subsequently resigned from her post as State Minister for Child Affairs following an uproar over her comments.
