The Central Province Governor Lalith U Gamage has suspended Matale Mayor Duljith Aluvihare with immediate effect.
A special committee headed by Mrs. Sarojini Kusala Weerawardena has been appointed by the Governor to probe alleged irregularities involving the Mayor. The allegations are awarding building constructions, felling valuable trees in the Matale town and purchasing electrical equipment for the council without proper tender procedure.
In the meantime, the current Matale Municipal Council Deputy Mayor, Sandanam Prakash has been directed to perform the duties and use of powers of the Matale Mayor.
The decision has been announced through a gazette notification.
