A customs clearance officer who was remanded for 21 months over an illegal beedi smuggling racket was released on bail by the Colombo High Court yesterday (Mar 06).
High Court Judge Aditya Patabandige during hearing had imposed a travel ban on the suspect while releasing him on two surety bails of Rs 4 million and Rs 5 million respectively.
The suspect, N.A. Anushka Nihal, who is the owner of a customs clearance company was remanded over charges of involvement in smuggling beedi weighing 12 tonnes.
Attorney Chaminda Athukorale representing the accused had pointed out that investigations into the racket were currently underway following an affidavit submitted by his client. He also claimed that Customs Officials had acted in a manner that led to the arrest of the suspect.
Accordingly, the High Court had decided to release the customs clearance officer after having considered a bail application filed by his attorney. The Attorney General and the Customs Department have been named as respondents in the bail request.
