A 37-year-old Iranian national serving in a massive irrigation project in Sri Lanka was arrested at the Katunayake International airport on Tuesday when attempted to smuggle out foreign currency worth Rs. 29 million.
Sri Lanka Customs revealed that the suspect was taken into custody on a tip off when he was about to leave the country on board a Qatar Airways flight QR 655 to Iran in the early hours of Tuesday.
Officers at the airport found Euro 170,000 hidden inside his luggage of the Iranian national who has made over 10 trips from Colombo to Iran and vice versa, a Customs spokesman said. (Bandula)
