The Special High Court will respond to the request to acquit former President's chief-of staff Gamini Senarath and seven others on March 27.
This was announced when the case was taken up before the three-member trial-at-bar of Jutices Sampath Abeykoon, Sampath Wijeratne, and Champa Janaki Rajaratne.
The attorney representing the accused had requested the release of his clients without obtaining statements from witnesses since the prosecution had failed to prove the charges against the suspects beyond a reasonable doubt.
The request was filed under Section 200 of of the Judicature Act.
Charges have been levelled against the said suspects for misappropriating Rs 500 million belonging to Litro Gas Lanka (Pvt) Ltd. by trasnferring it to Helanko Hotels (Pvt) Ltd. The said amount was initally given by Canvil Holdings (Pvt) Ltd to Litro Gas Lanka (Pvt) Ltd.
