A new mechanism to issue driving licenses for hearing impaired individuals is on the cards, National Council for Road Safety (NCRS) Chairman Dr. Sisira Kodagoda said.
Plans are currently underway to implement this system within a period of two months following a request put forward by the Sri Lanka Central Federation for the Deaf.
"There are some 10,000 hearing impaired individuals in this federation out of which 200 have applied for their licences claiming that they could drive" Dr Kodagoda said at a media briefing.
He noted that the Motor Traffic Department had listed out nine conditions to be agreed upon while obtaining the license. On the same lines, he said that these individuals had agreed to these conditions in writing and are currently undergoing driving lessons.
"A special symbol would be attached to the back of the vehicle which would be driven by these individuals" the NCRS Chairman said adding that the public would be made aware of this symbol in near future.
