EC issues guidelines to establish voter identity at polling centres

News

The Election Commission (EC) has released guidelines in order to establish voter identities at polling centres during the presidential election on November 16.

Issuing a statement, the EC said that voters should produce any one of the documents listed below to confirm their identity;

  • National Identity Card (NIC)
  • Valid Passport
  • Valid License
  • Pensioners Identity Card
  • Elders Identity Card
  • Clergy Identity Card

However, voters who are not in possession of any of the above documents can obtain a Special Identity Card from their respective Grama Niladhari officers.

The EC said it has instructed all District Secretaries to issue such ID cards for eligible voters.

Application forms to obtain the Special ID could be obtained from their Grama Niladhari officer.

These forms should be duly filled and handed over along with two colour / black and white photographs of sizes 2.5cm x 3 cm, to their Grama Niladhari officers on or before November 9.

Eligible voters who have applied for their NICs and have not received them by November 4 too could obtain these special ID cards, the EC said.
