The Elections Commission requests all public servants to refrain from engaging in strike actions during the presidential election period.
In a statement, Chairman Elections Commission Mahinda Deshapriya said that while he respects the right of public servants and trade unions to take action which is not prohibited by law to meet their demands, he pointed out that if all employees of the public service do not perform their duties, it would be difficult to conduct a Presidential election in a proper manner.
Therefore, the Elections Commission has urged that those in the Railway Department who are engaged in strike actions to resolve issues through negotiations.
The statement said further that the Election Commission is taking every necessary measure and devoting its energy to preparations so that the Presidential election could be held on the due date. It also appealed to all citizens to support the Commission in this endeavour.
