At least eighteen local fishermen were arrested yesterday for engaging in illegal fishing activities, navy said. Naval personnel attached to Kankesanthurai arrested eleven local fishermen, engaged in illegal fishing using many diving equipment in the seas off East of Point Pedro on Wednesday.
During the arrest, a Fishing Trawler, 2 FGDs and 30 Oxygen Cylinders used for fishing were taken into custody. The arrested persons and the items were handed over to the Assistant Director of Fisheries (Jaffna) for further investigations.
In a separate raid, four local fishermen engaged in illegal harvesting of sea cucumbers in the Southern seas of Iranathivu were arrested yesterday.
During the raid, a haul of 200 sea cucumbers along with an FGD and four pairs of diving fins were taken into custody. The arrested persons and their belongings were handed over to the Assistant Director of Fisheries (Kilinochchi) for onward action.
On the same day, naval personnel attached to SLNS Vijaya in Kalpitiya, arrested another three persons engaged in illegal fishing activities using a FGD and Monofilament fishing net. The arrested persons and the items were produced to the Assistant Director of Fisheries (Puttalam) for further investigations.
