The Election Commission is set to meet today to fix a fresh date to hold Parliamentary polls after the Supreme Court dismissed the Fundamental Rights (FR) petitions challenging the dissolution of the previous Parliament yesterday.
The three member Commission also informed the Courts earlier that it was not possible to hold elections on June 20, a date fixed by the Commission which was challenged by another FR petition citing the current coronavirus crisis in the country. The Court was told by the Commission that it would take at least 9-11 weeks to hold the elections considering the current COOVID-19 situation.
Meanwhile, Director General of Health Services. Dr. Anil Jasinghe also said that the Health Ministry will hand over health guidelines pertaining to holding the general elections today itself.
