Estate workers agree to Rs.700 daily wage

Sri Lankan plantation sector workers' unions on Friday reached an agreement following hours of negotiations for Rs.700 as the basic daily wage and Rs. 50 as productivity incentive.

CWC leader A. Thondaman, present at the meeting with RPC representative and Employers Federation of Ceylon chief Kanishka Weerasinghe with Ministers of Labour and Plantations at the Labour Ministry, finally reached agreement after months of negotiations.

Workers will also receive Rs. 40 payment per kilo plucked. The norm is 18 kg but workers on average pluck about 22 kg.

The government has agreed to release Rs. 100 million to the RPCs (plantation companies) to pay workers the three-month arrears.

The collective agreement between unions and plantation companies will be signed on Monday. (Sunimalee)
