The European Union delegation to Sri Lanka and the Maldives today announced that it is channeling around Rs 779 million (EUR 4.5 million) towards the building of stronger communities and a vibrant civil society.
The money will go towards a number of important new projects aimed at promoting human rights, the role of civil society and the value of civic engagement.
Ambassador of the Delegation f the EU David Daly said that for the EU the universality of human rights is one of its fundamental values. “Human rights are the “silver thread” of EU foreign policy. As a long standing partner of Sri Lanka’s civil society, the EU has supported work to address the challenges of upholding the rights” he said at an event held this morning to introduce its human rights invites for 2016.
