Former Army Commander Lieutenant General Mahesh Senanayake has been promoted to the rank of General by the President, Army Spokesman Brigadier Sumith Atapattu said.
The promotion will be in effect from August 17.
Lt. Gen. Senanayake was appointed as the 22nd Army Commander in 2017 before his term ended last week.
Major General Shavendra Silva was appointed as the new Army Commander by the President yesterday.
