Exclusive compartments for women only will be introduced in special trains which commute employees on a daily basis, Minister Arjuna Ranatunga told Times Online.
The first such train will be flagged off in Veyangoda at around 6:30 am by Minister of Transport Arjuna Ranatunga in line with the International Women's Day tomorrow (Mar 07).
"This is the first time that we have launched a special compartment designed specially for women" he pointed out adding that special security officers would be deployed to each compartment.
Trains such as 'Sagarika', Samudra Devi', 'Mahawi' which commute employees will be equipped with one compartment each which prohibits the entrance of males excluding railway officers.
Legal action would be taken against any individual who is found to have violated this rule, the Minister noted.
