The Department of Meteorology issued Heat index Advisory today warning that the temperature felt on human body is expected to increase up to ‘Extreme Caution’ level at places in North-Western, Western Provinces and Mannar, Ratnapura,
Galle and Matara Districts, Heat Advisory issued by the Department said.
The Heat Index Forecast is calculated by using relative humidity and maximum temperature and this is the condition that is felt on human body. It is generated by the Department of Meteorology for the next day period and prepared by using global numerical weather prediction model data.
The Extreme caution level at 32-41 Celsius could result in heat cramps and heat exhaustion also among the possibilities. Continuing activity could result in heat stroke. Effect of the heat index on human body is mentioned in the above table and it is prepared on the advice of the Ministry of Health, Nutrition and Indigenous Medicine.
The department urged public to take precautionary measures such as stay hydrated and takes breaks in the shade as often as possible.
